Steven Gerrard inspired the Reds’ 2005 triumph

HIGH FIVE

Liverpool are aiming for their sixth title in Madrid

BY ANDREW HASLAM

2005 LIVERPOOL 3-3 AC MILAN

(aet; Liverpool win 3-2 on penalties)

The miracle of Istanbul. Liverpool trailed 3-0 at half-time, but three goals in seven minutes, from Steven Gerrard, Vladimír Šmicer and Xabi Alonso, restored parity. Jerzy Dudek produced a stunning extra-time double stop from Andriy Shevchenko, and denied the Ukrainian again in the shoot-out to secure victory.

1984 LIVERPOOL 1-1 ROMA

(aet; Liverpool win 4-2 on penalties)

Liverpool won their fourth European Cup in the first final to be decided by a penalty shoot-out at the Stadio Olimpico, home of opponents Roma. Alan Kennedy again supplied the decisive kick, although the ‘wobbly legs’ act of goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar also proved crucial.

1981 LIVERPOOL 1-0 REAL MADRID

In a period of English dominance, Liverpool claimed their third European Cup in five years – England’s fifth in a row – at the Parc des Princes, the only goal arriving eight minutes from time when Liverpool left-back Alan Kennedy advanced to fire in from a tight angle.

1978 LIVERPOOL 1-0 CLUB BRUGGE

The Reds became the first British club to retain the European Cup in a tight final at Wembley. Kenny Dalglish’s chipped finish from a Graeme Souness pass settled it, though it took Phil Thompson’s late goal-line clearance to ensure
 the trophy remained on Merseyside.

1977 LIVERPOOL 3-1 MÖNCHENGLADBACH

Having beaten the German club in the 1973 UEFA Cup final to claim their first European trophy, Liverpool repeated the trick in Rome. Goals from Terry McDermott, Tommy Smith – who passed away in April – and Phil Neal took
the European Cup to Anfield for the first time.
